Sample journey

Culture, Nature & Heritage

Ancient kingdoms, sacred places and green landscapes, for travellers who like to understand where they are.

Illustrative image

This is an illustrative sample, not a fixed package. We adjust it to your dates, pace and interests.

Sri Lanka's cultural heartland holds rock fortresses, cave temples and ruined royal cities set among forest and farmland. This sample journey adds Kandy, in the hill country, and time in nature to balance the sightseeing.

Expect context and stories rather than a checklist. We can arrange a knowledgeable local guide wherever you would like one.

Highlights

  • Sigiriya rock fortress
  • The cave temples of Dambulla
  • The ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa
  • Kandy and its temples, in the hill country

How the route flows

A sample order of stops and how long people often stay. We set the real nights with you.

  1. Anuradhapura

    Often 1 to 2 nights

One of the island's oldest sacred cities, best seen slowly and early with a guide who tells the stories.

  2. A half-day transfer from Anuradhapura

    Polonnaruwa

    Often 1 night

An ancient royal city set among ruins and trees, visited in the cooler hours.

  3. A short transfer from Polonnaruwa

    Sigiriya and Dambulla

    Often 2 nights

The rock fortress and a cave temple, with a walk through the surrounding countryside.

  4. A half-day transfer from Sigiriya and Dambulla

    Kandy

    Often 2 nights

Finish in the hill city, with its sacred temple and lake, and rest after the heritage days.

Road legs are described, not timed. Exact times depend on the road and the day, and we confirm them when we plan your trip.

A sample day by day

One way this journey could unfold over 8 days. It is a concept, not a confirmed programme: the real order, nights and activities are set with you and depend on availability.

  1. Day 1 · Anuradhapura

    Arrival and the road north

Land, meet your driver and transfer towards the ancient capitals. A quiet first evening.

  2. Day 2 · Anuradhapura

    The sacred city

Anuradhapura early in the day with a guide, taking it slowly, and a rest in the heat of the day.

  3. Day 3 · Polonnaruwa

    To Polonnaruwa

A half-day transfer, then the ancient royal city in the cooler hours of the afternoon.

  4. Day 4 · Sigiriya and Dambulla

    On to the rock fortress

A morning among the ruins, then a short transfer to Sigiriya for a quiet evening.

  5. Day 5 · Sigiriya and Dambulla

The rock and the cave temple

The rock fortress early in the day, then a cave temple in the afternoon.

  6. Day 6 · Sigiriya and Dambulla

    A day in the countryside

A change of pace: a village walk, a cooking session with a local host or time in nature, as you prefer.

  7. Day 7 · Kandy

    To Kandy

A half-day transfer to the hill city, then the lake in the evening light.

  8. Day 8 · Kandy

    Kandy and the way home

The sacred temple at a quieter time, then the transfer towards the airport.

Season and conditions

The ancient cities are open-air sites, so we plan visits for early mornings and late afternoons and leave the middle of the day for rest. We adjust the order of stops to the months you travel.

Make it yours

Tell us what you would change: add a beach stop, slow the pace, swap a safari for a train ride. We will shape a version for you.

How we can adapt it

  • More depth: a day with an archaeology-minded guide at one site instead of three
  • A nature day, a village walk or a cooking session between the monuments
  • A shorter version that drops Anuradhapura and keeps the closest sites
  • Extra rest days if the temperature or the schedule feels heavy

Travel responsibly

  • Dress modestly at sacred places and follow the rules posted at each site
  • Do not climb on, touch or sit on ancient structures
  • Choose local guides and local meals, so the visit supports the people who live nearby

Practical facts

Each fact comes with its source and the date we last checked it. Rules and conditions change, so please confirm them before you travel.

  • Tickets for Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and other heritage sites are issued by the Central Cultural Fund, which also offers an online eTicket order. An order is valid for 90 days, the ticket is collected at the counter of the site and is valid for a single entry on the day, and payments are not refunded.

  • Sri Lanka has eight UNESCO World Heritage properties: six cultural (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Kandy, the Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications, and the Dambulla Cave Temple) and two natural (the Central Highlands and the Sinharaja Forest Reserve).

  • Sri Lanka has two monsoons. The south-west monsoon (May to September) brings most of its rain to the south-west and the hill country; the north-east monsoon (December to February) rains mainly on the eastern half of the island. In the months between, October to November and March to April, showers can fall anywhere. Conditions vary from year to year.
