Culture & heritage

Ancient cities, cave temples and living traditions, explained by people who know the stories.

Sri Lanka's history is written in stone: a rock fortress above the forest, cave temples with painted ceilings, and the remains of royal cities that were once the centre of the island.

A good guide turns these places from monuments into stories. We can arrange one where you want it, and balance sightseeing days with time to simply be there.

When and how

  • The ancient sites are open-air, so we plan visits for early morning and late afternoon and leave the heat of the day for rest.
  • Entry tickets for the main heritage sites are issued by the Central Cultural Fund, and we plan your visits around how its ticketing works.
  • A guide who knows the stories turns ruins into a place you can picture. Tell us if you prefer depth at one site over a quick look at several.

Travel responsibly

  • Dress modestly and remove shoes and hats where the site asks you to
  • Do not climb on, touch or sit on ancient structures
  • Ask before photographing people, and be patient with ceremonies

Practical facts

Each fact comes with its source and the date we last checked it. Rules and conditions change, so please confirm them before you travel.

  • Tickets for Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and other heritage sites are issued by the Central Cultural Fund, which also offers an online eTicket order. An order is valid for 90 days, the ticket is collected at the counter of the site and is valid for a single entry on the day, and payments are not refunded.
