Central hill country

Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)

A sacred mountain and pilgrimage place, climbed through the night to reach the summit at dawn.

Adam's Peak, known in Sri Lanka as Sri Pada, is a mountain in the hill country that people climb as a pilgrimage. Many climb in the dark to reach the top at first light.

The mountain lies in the Peak Wilderness, one of the three parts of the UNESCO Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. For most visitors it is a demanding, memorable and respectful early morning, not a casual stroll.

What to expect

  • A pilgrimage climbed at night
  • Sunrise from the summit when the sky is clear
  • The pilgrimage season, with many people on the path
  • The Peak Wilderness, part of the UNESCO Central Highlands

When and how

  • The pilgrimage season runs from the December full moon to the May full moon, with the most climbers in January and February. The climb is still possible outside the season, but bring a torch.
  • Views depend on the weather, and cloud can hide the sunrise. We never promise a clear sky, and we plan a calm day around the climb.
  • The climb is long and steep. We tell you plainly what it asks of you, and we offer other ways to enjoy the hills if it is not for you.

Travel responsibly

  • This is a place of worship: dress modestly and be quiet and patient with other climbers
  • Carry your litter back down
  • Follow the path and the guidance of the people who look after it
